let’s go to the zoo

Yesterday my nephew and I went to the Pittsburgh Zoo and it was so fun!

Coming from San Diego, I had access to one of the best zoos in the world, but I really enjoyed the zoo here. It’s not overwhelmingly large and many of the exhibits are set up inĀ  a way that lets you get pretty close to the animals, which I really liked.

In fact, two of my favorite exhibits were the kangaroos and deer. You got to go inside and see the animals up close. My nephew and I sat with the deer and ate our little sack lunches.

There’s also a really great aviary in Pittsburgh too that I want to check out this summer.

What activities are you looking forward to this summer?

About 20-30 minutes from my house there is a beautiful state park. So Saturday I forced my mom to go on a hike with me at Morraine State Park.

It was beautiful and I noticed a bench in the trees off the paved bike path and realized there was a small trail that led to a really cute, rustic bridge. And lucky for me I saw a group of stand-up paddle boarders on the lake, so now I know where to do some paddle boarding in the Burgh!

Morraine was so much fun and beautiful, I want to go back and ride a bicycle too!

luhr me to the movies

As I’ve mentioned before, I just about lose my mind when multiple things I love come together.

In this case, it’s one of my favorite writers and one of my favorite filmmakers: F. Scott Fitzgerald + Baz Luhrmann.

Fitzgerald has long been a favorite writer of mine and The Great Gatsby has always been one of my favorite tragic love stories, along with Moulin Rouge.

In fact, in high school, I would obsessively watch Moulin Rouge and sob at the end every time. If high school me had known that Baz Luhrmann was going to make Gatsby into a movie, it would have been more than my excitable, little teenage heart could bear.

I just don’t know if my patience will last until Christmas when it comes out!

new york in seven photos

A beautiful afternoon in the East Village.

World Trade Center Park.

Lunch at Crif Dogs.

Silliness on the subway.

Radio City Music Hall.

The most delicious pistachio almond ice cream.

Madison Square Eat.

Back to real life, I’ve returned from New York.

The trip was amazing. I thought I would feel really emotional about seeing my friends after so long, but I’m fortunate to have such good friends it ended up feeling like no time had passed at all. It was wonderful.

Of course I had intended to take a zillion photos (and a complete instagram tour of NYC), but ended up taking significantly less than expected.

Some highlights from my NY trip this time around included:

  • Perfect weather the entire time. It was gorgeous and the pristine condition for lots of walking (unfortunately my poor choice of shoes and swollen feet would have disagreed).
  • Lunch at Crif Dogs (as recommended by Anthony Bourdain). I had a bacon-wrapped deep-fried hotdog with avocados and sour cream. Yum!
  • Pistachio almond ice cream.
  • An amazing birthday dinner for Maggie at Traif. I felt like a super hip New Yorker.
  • We visited the awesome Momufuku three times! We had crack pie, cake truffles, cereal milk ice cream, strawberry sesame ice cream, chocolate chip-corn flake-marshmallow cookies and a pistachio croissant!
  • Dinner at my cousin’s restaurant in Long Island. I was so excited to finally try it and it did not disappoint. It was so good to see my cousin and his wife and their amazing (and popular) restaurant!
  • I also did not eat an entire cupcake the entire time I was in NY! I can’t believe it. That was definitely not the plan, but it’s OK — last year we ate an obscene amount.

I also vowed not to do anything tourist-y since I had been a few times before and wanted to pretend I was a super-cool New Yorker (I fought hard against my instinct to look up at the buildings and wore my ear buds on the subway), but I was offered a free voucher for a tour of Radio City Music Hall, so I gave it a try and had so much fun! It was beautiful and enormous and I met a Rockette that’s from the teensy town in Nebraska where my aunt and uncle have lived for the past about 70 years. Such a small world.

I had such a blast and this trip sealed it in my mind that I need to live there.

I’m back from NY, but got sick the last day and have not been feeling like doing anything.

Eventually I will have to get back into the swing of things though and I’m So excited to share more about my trip soon!

I’m on Tumblr! So exciting!

Actually, I primarily did it so that I could upload my Instagram photos to place where I can access them on a computer (without inundating my Facebook friends with photos).

It’s the most practical solution I could come up with — if you know of a better way, I would love to know! I love Instagram, but sometimes it frustrates me that it’s completely restricted to mobile devices.

My Tumblr is also called dapperblossom and you can follow here.

I got my ass out of bed so early on Sunday to check out The Shops at Target.

Of course, the one time I did that, it was totally unnecessary. No one was in the store.

It’s cool though, I ended up scoring a super awesome “Golden Girls chic” tunic from The Webster. If I had a dog, I would have totally gotten the Polka Dog goodies too.

The Cos Bar cosmetics were a bit disappointing though. I’m sure the stuff is nice, but everything was kind of random, lime green and purple Halloween colors.

I now plan to spend the summer lounging around with Blanche, Rose and Dorothy.

Here they are! A little less crazy looking than my other ones (but I still love them).

I got them from Coastal again. This pair is by Joseph Marc and I just love them!

I’ve been wondering where there’s a park close to me. Turns out, there’s one just up the hill from my sister’s house and it’s beautiful.

My nephew and I went on a walk and explored the park — camera in hand.

I think the foliage in the Burgh is so beautiful. It’s so different from Southern California that I take a picture of just about every twig and leaf I see! It will taper off, I’m sure, but until then, here are some more flora and fauna pictures.

Can I just say how happy I am now that Instagram is available to android?!

I’ve been Instagraming everything. It’s so much fun! (you can follow me @kovenator)

What do you think? Love Instagram or think it’s overrated?
